Women are also more likely to be stuck with debilitating perfectionist patterns of thinking and behaving. The unrewarding drive to be perfect is an exhausting venture that I admit I have found myself on at times. There is a distinction between striving to live at the peak of one’s potential and expecting to be flawless at every moment along the way. The following is a list of some of the most common perfection characteristics:
- Need approval from all people/sources
- Does not condone making mistakes
- Very competitive with others
- Resists taking risks to avoid poor results
- Cannot tolerate criticism
- Focuses mainly on failures
- Feels uncomfortable with compliments
- Establishes unrealistic expectations for themselves
Your magnificent mind will be weighed down by demands that your results can only be favorable. That is just not the way life works. There will always be times when your actions do not produce the outcome that is ideal. Your ability to excel in these times is greatly affected by the quality of your mind.
The way that you perceive these occurrences will make all the difference between energy that is exerted for futile or functional purposes. A futile use of energy will suggest that you might be a failure for an exam mark received. A functional use of that energy would be directed towards exploring what went wrong, how you could alter your study process and a belief in your ability to do better.
Make a commitment to release yourself from the burden of perfectionism. Optimize your capabilities and appreciate all your experiences. Remind yourself that life is all about growth. Recognize your tendency to seek perfection and bid it farewell. It is a vicious cycle that contributes to disappointment and discouragement. It diminishes the vital health of your mind.
