I recently read a post in the GKIC blog written by Dan Kennedy. His message about the potential paralysis caused by fear is something that I imagine we can all relate to at various times in our lives. The GKIC blog emphasizes that the most successful, wealthy individuals harness the power of a confident mind. He says:
“Fear of others’ opinions about the outcomes of your decisions and actions hamstrings you more than any other obstacle or handicap. I was taught that the level or strength of your belief shows in your results. In other words, your outcomes reflect beliefs.”~ Dan Kennedy
We rarely stop to think about the ways in which fear and uncertainty directs the particular path we’ve taken (or not). Rather than try new things that could contribute to our personal growth and development, we (often unconsciously) adopt a safe, comfortable approach to life that is loaded with self-imposed limitations. I talked more about self-imposed limitations in this previous post.
What Can You Do?
Become aware of your underlying fears and recognize that they are inhibiting your authenticity and your development. Step back and assess the likelihood that what you are in fear of will actually occur, and what the outcome could be. Give yourself credit for what you are capable of managing should the worst occur. You are stronger and more capable than you think.
The ultimate goal is to shift the energy and your programmed response to fear. To do this, it is helpful to be able to recognize fear when it is first emerging. With this ability, you are better equipped to start the process of modifying how you react to it. Remind yourself that many great accomplishments and discoveries began with a willingness to take a risk and try something that pushes the “alert out of comfort zone” button. Tap into your mind’s ability to challenge and reframe those deeply entrenched beliefs on auto-play. Here are some counter-statements:
“I know this is a risk, but I’ve carefully considered it and believe in the potential for growth despite the outcome”
“There is no reason that I can’t accomplish __”
“That’s my old belief system again. Thanks for your concern but I’m creating a new belief system now”
“I won’t know what is possible if I don’t take a leap and try”
This is not to say that those who are living their lives with optimized mind health and high levels of success do not experience fear. The difference lies in the ability to continue to challenge yourself to aspire to greater achievements and new experiences in spite of that fear.
