As a woman who might be new to the entrepreneurial world, you may be prone to self-defeating behavior. How can you gradually move from such behavior to a positive one to realize your professional goals? It may be difficult to make this shift. Yet, you realize it is vitally important to change your behavioural patterns to be able to reach your potential.
Stop Being Maladaptive
Apart from building on your strengths, you also need to remove what blocks your vision; you may need to change your outlook to be able to see and respond to a new opportunity. So stop being maladaptive. Your life and career/business can change when you remain open to what is possible. Modify your thinking as well as your actions. Not just more (we can all be very busy) but smarter. You may have set the right goals, but don’t take the “right” action; you are indecisive or go off on a different path that you know is not the one you intended to take; or even when you see what changes you need to make, you remain inert.
The Way You See Defeat
One of the main causes of self-defeating behaviour is poor self-esteem. As a human, it’s impossible to be perfect; you will unavoidably make mistakes and possibly let yourself down at times. By lingering on your “failures”, you may also find rational for not making any new attempts to improve your life and career. You may exaggerate what you see as your flaws and see every defeat as the product of your inadequacies. Success comes from growth and lessons learned not a definition of you as a failure. The most fulfilled and highest achievers will often say that things didn’t always work out, but that didn’t mean that they were incapable or inadequate.
Break the Patterns
Usually, the reality is different than the messages and stories created in our minds. Try to reason this out. Do you consider yourself incapable of realizing your goals? Is there logic or truth behind this? Make a list with the positive traits that can help you move forward. Don’t try to play them down or hide them. Sometimes, especially as a woman, you may even feel guilty for having positive qualities that make you stand out from the crowd in some way. You are not making a statement of superiority but of capacity and potential. You may also feel that you don’t deserve success. Once you are conscious of these obstructive thoughts, you can start making an effort to replace them with positive ones. So dare to break these self-destructive patterns; acknowledge your exceptionality and help others benefit from it!
