Maria Bello is a very successful award-winning T.V. and film actress. She was born in 1967 in Pennsylvania. She has won a NY Films Critic Circle Award for her performance in A History of Violence (2005). She is also a global philanthropist.

Early Life

Maria Elana Bello was born on April 18th, 1967. Her birthplace is Norristown, Pennsylvania. She started studying at Villanova University with the intention of working as a human rights lawyer. However, after attending an acting class, she decided to pursue an acting career instead.

A Memorable Acting Career

She worked Off-Broadway before finding a role as a corporate spy in Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Then, she appeared as a guest-star on E.R, NBC’s famous drama; she made such a great impression on the producers, that she was cast as a regular character in the next season.

She played in various film roles over the first decade of the new millennium. In particular, in The Cooler (2003), she embodies a cocktail waitress in love with an unlucky gambler. In A History of Violence (2005), she interprets a spouse haunted by her husband’s past, a role that won her a Golden Globe nomination and a New York Film Critics Circle award. Another interesting moment of her career is her role in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee (2009). She has also taken part in well-known T.V. shows, such as Law and Order: SVU and Prime Suspect.

Activist and Philanthropist

Her activist work is significant. Specifically, she has assisted in founding the DreamYard Drama Project for young people in the Bronx; in addition, she has substantially aided women and families in Darfur and Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. She is one of the co-founders of WE ADVANCE, aiming at supporting women by providing education and platforms for connections. The organization strives to make healthcare a priority, and stop Gender-based Violence; it makes efforts to connect the various organizations which support women in Haiti and offer urgent care to women.

Maria makes regular posts on The Huffington Post magazine in order to raise awareness of problems faced by women. For example, she tries to sensitize people to the ongoing crisis experienced by women in Darfur; and to the underrepresentation of women in directorial positions.

Private Life

She is the mother of a teenage boy; she has recently revealed that she has a homosexual relationship and has related that her son showed his understanding and love after explaining this situation to him. The actress has received important support for this revelation.
